This week is World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week – a global annual campaign to improve awareness and understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among the public, stakeholders and policymakers, who all play a critical role in reducing the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.
AMR is a pressing global health and socioeconomic crisis, with significant impacts on human and animal health, food production, and the environment. The World Health Organization calls on all sectors to encourage the prudent use of antimicrobials and to strengthen preventive measures addressing AMR, working together collaboratively through a One Health approach.
The One Health Breakthrough Partnership (OHBP) has worked with the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland on this year’s antimicrobial awareness week – “Keep Antibiotics Working”. By working together to raise awareness and taking positive and proactive action to be mindful of the use of antimicrobials, we can minimise the threat of AMR and ensure that antimicrobials remain effective in the future.
