The One Health Breakthrough Partnership and it’s collaborative work in Scotland was presented today during the CleanMed Europe 2024 conference under the “Prescribing for the Environment” session. Prof Sharon Pfleger (NHS Highland) presented ways healthcare practitioners can help make medicines use and healthcare more sustainable. She also participated in a panel discussion with Dr Bent Windelborg Nielsen (Leading clinician, MD, Dr.Med.Sci, MPG at Regional Hospital Randers) about the way health professionals prescribe medicine plays a key role in pharmaceutical residues entering the environment and how improving prescribing practices can reduce the negative impact of pharmaceuticals on the planet. The main themes included the importance of patient and practitioner education, antibiotics stewardship, appropriate waste disposal, and improving medicine prescribing and use (considering preventative and alternative approaches).
The Day 3 theme was “Protecting our Environment”. To celebrate World Environment Day, the sessions focussed on climate resilience, biodiversity, and the healthcare industry’s environmental impact. It featured keynote by Peter van den Hazel (medical doctor, President of the Health and Environment Alliance) “Protecting our Environment and Health”. As well as sessions on “Collaborating for biodiversity at health facilities” and “Farming’s impact on antibiotic efficacy: the role of healthcare”.
