The One Health Breakthrough Partnership (OHBP) is delighted to announce that our co-founder, Professor Sharon Pfleger, will be a featured speaker at the upcoming Fleming Fund Fellowships Symposium on Friday, 31st January 2025, at the Playfair Library, Old College, University of Edinburgh. This prestigious event will bring together leading experts, researchers, and policymakers dedicated to addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health approach.

The Fleming Fund Fellowships Symposium is a crucial gathering aimed at strengthening global capacity to combat AMR. Hosted by the University of Edinburgh, this event will highlight the vital contributions of nearly 60 Fleming Fund Fellows from Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Zambia. Through mentorship and collaboration, these fellows have been developing cross-sectoral solutions to mitigate the rise of drug-resistant infections.

Bringing together over 70 AMR specialists, including Fleming Fund Fellows, academic mentors, clinicians, and global health professionals, the event will showcase key research findings, policy initiatives, and innovative strategies to tackle AMR through collaborative and sustainable approaches.

As a leading advocate for One Health solutions, Professor Sharon Pfleger will deliver a pivotal presentation titled: “One Health or No Health – Why Caring for Our Environment and Animals Keeps Us Healthy and Drives Down AMR”. In her talk, Professor Pfleger will explore how environmental sustainability, responsible pharmaceutical use, and cross-sector collaboration play a fundamental role in reducing AMR. Drawing on her extensive experience in pharmaceutical public health, she will highlight how OHBP’s innovative work in reducing pharmaceutical pollution and promoting antimicrobial stewardship is shaping global best practices.

The symposium will feature an impressive lineup of expert talks, panel discussions, and networking opportunities. Some key sessions include:

  • “Nanopore Technologies in Low-Resource Settings” – Exploring rapid diagnostic tools for AMR surveillance.
  • “Malawi’s Perspective: Impacts of AMR from Local to Global” – Showcasing country-led AMR interventions.
  • “Building Reliable and Robust AMR Datasets in Kenya” – Enhancing data-driven decision-making in AMR policy.
  • “Putting Farmers at the Heart of AMR Policy” – Addressing AMR in agriculture through sustainable practices.
  • “One Health Approach to AMR” (Roundtable Discussion) – An interactive dialogue with global AMR experts.

Professor Pfleger’s presence at the Fleming Fund Fellowships Symposium reinforces OHBP’s commitment to integrating One Health principles into public health policies. This event serves as a vital opportunity to exchange ideas, strengthen partnerships, and drive forward impactful solutions that protect both human and environmental health.
