Shaping the Future: International AMR Stakeholder Workshop Sept 23-24

On the 23rd-24th of September 2024, the India-UK AMR team will host a virtual networking opportunity for the global pharmaceutical community to discuss initiatives on combating AMR, share research findings and make policy recommendations. This online stakeholders’ forum ’Shaping the Future Workshop’ will allow for international sector participation and co-creation in the next steps towards shaping the future of antimicrobial resistance. The workshop will be hosted by Imperial College London and organised by the AMRWatch research group on behalf of the India-UK AMR community.

Work will be shared by the UK’s Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and India’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) collaborative and cross-disciplinary research programme titled: “India-UK: Tackling antimicrobial resistance in the Environment from antimicrobial manufacturing waste”. Comprised of five research projects (AMRflows, AMSPARE, AMRWatch, ResPharm and SELECTAR) spanning eleven institutions in the UK and seventeen institutions in India, the programme has aimed to enhance our understanding of pollution from antimicrobial manufacturing waste- an environmental pathway for AMR that is currently under-researched and under-regulated. The programme focused in India; one of the world’s main producers of antibiotic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and Finished Dosage Forms (FDFs) and one of the countries worst affected by AMR. The teams have conducted extensive research and wish to share findings with the wider AMR community and stakeholders.

An introduction to the programme and a brief exploration of antimicrobial manufacturing pollution and its related knowledge gaps can be found in the briefing paper: Manufacturing antibiotics: antibiotic resistance and aquatic ecotoxicity in the environment.
