Strengthening Scottish-Swedish collaboration in One Health

OHBP members from University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and NHS Highland are collaborating with researchers from Uppsala University and the Swedish Medical Products agency to drive One Health research and innovation in Scotland and Sweden.

Rural and remote areas in Scotland and Sweden face similar challenges related to geography, environment and demography, including small populations with large seasonal variations placing a large stress on infrastructure including healthcare and water services. The project aims to enhance cross-national interdisciplinary activity between researchers and healthcare professionals in Scotland and Sweden towards developing sustainable practices in pharmaceutical use and environmental stewardship.

By fostering interdisciplinary research and education, this collaboration seeks to address pharmaceutical pollution and the interconnection between the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. It emphasises the One Health approach, and seeks to develop innovative, cross-national solutions by establishing a collaborative network that brings together researchers, policymakers, and healthcare professionals. Through joint research, exchange programs, and knowledge dissemination, the project aspires to identify and implement sustainable pharmaceutical practices across both Scotland and Sweden.
